capito, grazie mille.

exactly.

Ok, now it's perfectly clear.
Therefore ths means that D-lighting set on camera will result in the NEF file whilst D-Lighting applied during PP in ViewNX will not.
Thank you very much Ellis,

When you use the Active D-lighting settign on the camera it's algorithms are applied to the NEF as it is being processed in the camera's EXPEED processor, not as a suggestion like other camera settings (sharpening, styles, etc. )it is as much an integral part of the raw NEF file as exposure is. I know there are some people who disagree with me aboutthis, but I have had conversations with Nikon's engineers and programmers about this and they haven't .
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Well, actually what surprised me is what you wrote on you post:

Not completely true - the white balance you set on the camera will be respected. Likewise with the Nikon's Active D-Lighting, that setting as well is used. And although it is not an exact match the camera profiles in ACR for Photoshop & Bridge CS4 for pretty close to camera manufacturer profiles (Vivid, landscape, Camera neutral, etc) and it is easy enough in ACR to set one of these as a default preset if you so choose.
what do you really mean, for instance, with "Likewise with the Nikon's Active D-Lighting, that setting as well is used"?
This is what I did not understand ;-)

If I read your post correctly, what you are saying is that the processing steps you applied i nNikon View are not being used in Adobe Camera Raw. That does not surprise me. it would probably not work if yo ureversed the order of processing (ACR first make processign adjustments there and then opened the same raw file up in View NX). This has to do with where Nikon and Adobe stores the data regarding the processing. If ACR is unaware of the address of that data fork, it will ignore it.
This is not the same thing as encrypting data and every camera company does it, as do the various raw processing software firms like Adobe, Capture one, Bibble, etc. does this.

Hi Ellis,
I red your post at
http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00Sr5K concerning what in subject and, as I have the same kind of problem you’re talking about (and being that thread more or less already abandoned) I would really appreciate if you could help me.

I was leaving to India and I decided to take my macbook with me, along with Nikon Transfer and Nikon ViewNX (my camera is a D300) so I could backup my photos and start doing a little PP. More precisely, I made some modifications on aperture, white balance, profile and D-Lighting HS. I saved then all the pictures back to the original NEF file (I noticed that Nikon software doesn’t create any .xmp file as Adobe does).
Once at home I open my pictures with Adobe Camera Raw (I don’t really like much CaptureNX as I find it too complicated for what I need to do) and surprisingly I see that ACR doesn’t apply any of the modifications I did. Just to be sure, I open them again with ViewNX and I can see again all my PP job. All my friends tell me that ONLY Nikon software can use Nikon specific features (those applied in camera too) and this is what I believed since I red your post some days ago…
That’s why I’m here, bothering you about that topic.
I hope you don’t mind too much if I decided to send you an email (no PM option was available in the forum) and you can apologize my English. You know, I usually speak Italian.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help
Grazie!
